A Bolton café has said a food hygiene rating of one was the result of a paperwork issue, after its score was increased to three following an appeal.

Blush and Brew, on Blackburn Road, was initially awarded a rating of one after a food hygiene inspection on March 31, 2026.

However, the business said the rating did not reflect food hygiene standards and was instead linked to paperwork that has since been corrected.

A spokesman said: “The score was an issue with the paperwork and has since been reinspected and rescored to a higher score of three.

“The council has published this today as it was under appeal and was awaiting to go live, so the paperwork issue was resolved.”

The updated rating has now been published following the conclusion of the appeal process.

According to the original inspection report, improvement was necessary in hygienic food handling, while major improvement was necessary in the management of food safety.

The cleanliness and condition of the premises were rated as generally satisfactory.

Food hygiene inspections assess businesses on food handling practices, the condition of the premises and the systems in place to ensure food is safe to eat.

Blush and Brew is a café on Blackburn Road known for its colourful interiors and brunch menu.

The venue serves speciality coffees, breakfast and lunch dishes, sweet treats and milkshakes, and has become popular locally for its distinctive pink-themed décor.
