They are calling for Bolton Council to reconsider plans for land off The Alders, between Tonge Moor and Breightmet.
It has now attracted more than 200 signatures.
The council's draft Local Plan proposes removing the land from the Green Belt and allocating it for up to 50 Travelling Showpeople plots.
The allocation would not itself grant planning permission for a development.
Tammy Galloway, who started the petition, said residents of nearby Thicketford Close would look directly over the proposed site.
She said: "The residents of Thicketford Close who will be directly impacted and look out over the new site have not been consulted.
"The first we heard was in your newspaper."
The petition raises concerns about the potential impact on the Green Belt, traffic, existing infrastructure and people living nearby.
It calls on the council to reconsider the allocation and examine alternative locations, while asking for further engagement with the Tonge Moor community.
The council's own draft proposals identify several matters which would need addressing before any development could proceed.
The Alders is an unadopted road which already provides access for HGVs travelling to Firwood Industrial Estate.
It is narrow, has no pedestrian footpath and is also a designated bridleway.
The Local Plan says highway improvements would be required and any future proposal would need to demonstrate that two HGVs could safely manoeuvre and pass one another.
Noise and lighting assessments would also be required because Travelling Showpeople sites can include the storage and maintenance of vehicles, rides and equipment.
The allocation comes after an assessment identified a minimum requirement for 30 Travelling Showpeople plots in Bolton by 2042, with half required by 2030.
Bolton Council previously said there will be formal consultation on the updated Local Plan, including drop-in sessions, subject to approval by the council.
A spokesperson said: "We would urge everyone to view this latest version of the Local Plan and to have their say during the consultation."
Travelling Showpeople are distinct from Gypsies and Travellers, with the term referring specifically to a cultural community traditionally involved in travelling fairs, circuses and shows who may return to permanent yards when not travelling for work.
