The M60 has been named one of the UK’s most challenging motorways.
The road is ranked top in a national list compiled by MoneySuperMarket in its latest Great British Motorway Report.
The ranking considered delays, incidents and collision risk to determine the UK’s most demanding motorway routes.
A spokesperson for MoneySuperMarket said: "Feeling nervous about motorway driving is common, especially for less frequent drivers, but a bit of preparation goes a long way.
"Give yourself extra time so you're not rushing, and plan your route and rest stops in advance.
"If you’re travelling alone, consider sharing your route with someone you trust if it helps you feel more comfortable, but avoid putting pressure on yourself to stick to a strict arrival time."
The M65 placed 10th in the rankings.
The M60 in Greater Manchester topped the list as the UK’s most challenging motorway, followed by the M25 and M11.
The report states: "Encircling Greater Manchester and linking many of the region’s motorways, the M60 recorded the lowest overall score in the index due to a combination of journey delays, collision risk and disruption levels. Despite handling significant volumes of traffic, the M60 experienced some of the highest average delays, at 15.58 seconds per vehicle per mile. "Alongside this, the M60 saw 34 collisions in the past year and has a collision risk of 0.599 per km. Despite these challenges, the M60 remains an essential route for regional connectivity."
The M65 placed 10th in the rankings.
The M621 and M602 rounded out the top five.
The M55 recorded an average delay of 5.22 seconds per vehicle per mile, with 14 collisions reported in the past year and a collision risk of 0.725 per km.
No service stations are located along the route.
Nearby, the M65 saw 34 collisions and an average delay of 4.38 seconds per vehicle per mile, with one service station every 28 miles.
At the other end of the scale, the M48 was named the UK’s best motorway for drivers, thanks to only one collision recorded in the past year and the lowest collision risk in the country.
The M180 and M54 also ranked highly for smoother journeys, with low collision rates and minimal delays.
The report also evaluated service stations, with Cherwell Valley on the M40 taking the top spot nationally for its range of amenities, including 24 EV charging points and food, retail, and rest facilities.
Tebay Services on the M6 ranked second, with a 4.3-star Google rating.
Hopwood Park, Oxford, and Strensham completed the top five.
The least favourable service station was Leeming Bar on the A1(M), criticised for its limited facilities.
Alicia Hempsted, at MoneySuperMarket, said: "Taking the time to prepare properly can make all the difference between a stressful journey and a confident one."
