In September 1965 rumours about a ghost walking close to the banks of the River Croal got completely out of hand.
It led to some 2,000 youngsters ‘invading’ Queen’s Park with some of them spilling into the grounds of the nearby Bolton Royal Infirmary and even tapping on ward windows and disturbing patients.

Bolton’s Chief Constable, Mr J W Moody, appealed to parents to keep their children away from the park describing it as a “stupid hoax”.
What started the rumour of a ghost at large was believed to have been two teenagers who were seen in the hospital grounds with a white sheet over their heads.
