A SCIENTIST from Bolton is involved in a groundbreaking experiment to recreate the Big Bang.

Dr Paul Jackson, whose passion for science was first ignited at Turton High School, is one of thousands of scientists taking part in the project at a futuristic Swiss laboratory.

A series of controlled explosions will be carried out at the CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research) laboratory in Geneva, starting on Wednesday, September 10.

The aim of the experiment is to recreate the conditions that brought about the creation of the universe.

Dr Jackson, aged 32, will be working alongside 2,500 scientists from 37 countries.

He said: “It is great to be working here with so many great scientists from all over the world.

“I never imagined when I was at Turton High School that I would come this far as a scientist.”

The explosions will be carried out in a 27km tunnel — known as the Large Hadron Collider — which has been built 100m below CERN.
