LEIGH Genesis were the architects of their own downfall at Victory Park, where Whitby came from behind and scored twice in the closing minutes to take all three points.

Steve Bleasdale’s side looked to be well-placed when they took the lead after 12 minutes, Brad Maylett setting up former England U21 midfielder, Chris Holland, for his first goal for the club.

Whitby levelled just before half-time, when Josh Wilson was caught out at right back, giving Karl Charlton space to beat Steve Dickinson. and they went ahead early in the second half through Danny Brunskill.

Tom Field put Leigh level but Charlton put Whitby back in front on 72 minutes to set up a thrilling finish.

Wilson and Holland went close as Leigh went all out for an equaliser, but as their desperation grew, they left themselves open at the back and two minutes from time, Dickinson was caught in possession outside his area and Tony Hackworth put the result beyond doubt.

FC United’s hopes of hoisting themselves into the top half of the UniBond Premier Division were dented when they were held to a scoreless draw by Worksop Town at Gigg Lane.

The Rebels are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Ossett Town.
