A POLICE unit set up to bust organised crime in Greater Manchester says the streets are safer after a Leigh man was jailed for 14 years.

Ricky Prakesh Parmar, aged 26, of Preistfields, Leigh, was sent to prison after guns and drugs were seized from his house.

And at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester this week, Parmar pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, three counts of possession of a firearm and possession of a class A drug with intent to supply.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Xcalibre Organised Crime Unit uncovered the haul.

Xcalibre’s Det Chief Insp Alex Millett said: "The whole of Parmar’s flat was littered with firearms, ammunition, drugs and drugs paraphernalia. He was clearly involved in high levels of criminal activity, and we are all safer for him being behind bars.” The court earlier heard how offices walked into the master bedroom and could immediately see a Baretta 12 gauge pump action saw-off shotgun in a wardrobe.

Officers also found eight 12-gauge shotgun cartridges inside a knitted bag kept in the same wardrobe.

A Walther PP 9mm handgun and a 9mm cartridge were then found in a carrier bag in Parmar’s bedroom, and a loaded Waltha PPK .765 calibre black handgun was found under his double bed.

It was loaded with three .32 calibre live cartridges.

Finally, officers found a side-by-side double barrel sawn-off gun along with more ammunition, a firearm cleaning brush, a large quantity of cash and a quantity of brown powder, believed to be heroin.
