WANDERERS have been linked with a move for Hearts skipper Christophe Berra.

Gary Megson is searching for up to four new players as he looks to strengthen his threadbare squad in the January transfer window.

And reports have suggested the Bolton boss has set his sights on the 23-year-old defender.

Wanderers’ chief scout Colin Harvey was in the crowd at Celtic Park on Saturday to watch Berra produce an outstanding display in the 1-1 draw with the Scottish Premier League champions.

Cash-strapped Hearts would find it difficult to resist a bid of around £3million for the left-sided centre-back who has broken into George Burley's Scotland squad this season.

The troubled Edinburgh club desperately need to raise funds to stave off a financial crisis that has twice seen them fail to pay their players on time this term.

With Megson being given a green light to spend in the new year following last Thursday’s meeting with owner Eddie Davies, Wanderers can expect to be linked with a host of names in the next six weeks.

Rochdale’s young hitman Will Buckley is the latest to allegedly be attracting the interests of Megson, with Blackburn and Coventry City also monitoring the £750,000-rated 20-year-old who has scored five times in League Two this season.

But the Reebok chief has been warned off another possible target, Wolves winger Michael Kightly.

The England Under-21 international, who signed a new four-year contract in the summer, has helped the Midlands club establish a six-point lead at the top of the Championship.

And Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has dismissed talk of Kightly, 22, leaving Molineux.

“We are not selling anyone,” said McCarthy.

“It would be counter-productive. We are top of the league and trying to win promotion.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Davies has been linked with a shock move to Chelsea.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is desperate to land a new striker in the transfer window, has been told to tighten the purse-strings by owner Roman Abramovich.

That has forced the Blues boss to consider a move for Davies – as well as Wigan’s Emile Heskey and Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones – as he searches for a cut-price hitman, though, despite the speculation, it seems highly unlikely Wanderers’ 31-year-old forward will be following in Nicolas Anelka’s footsteps to Stamford Bridge in January.
