It’s a common fact of life that as we approach our mature years, certain things start to change with our bodies.

Angela Close, from The Beauty Lounge, says: “In particular our skins start to experience dramatic changes such as loss of elasticity, loss of collagen, firmness, moisture and problems with pigmentation marks.

“There are numerous treatments and anti ageing products available at The Beauty Lounge that can help to slow down the ageing process.”

Here are a few self help measures you can do outside the salon environment:

1. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, at least eight hours if possible as not enough will deplete your skin of vital nutrients.

2. A healthy diet incorporating plenty of fresh organic fruit and vegetables. Taking supplements of fish oils, vitamin E and vitamin C also helps.

3. Drink plenty of water, 8 glasses per day to cleanse the body and detox the skin.

4. Don’t smoke — this starves the skin of oxygen and essential nutrients. The skin will appear grey, dull and devitalised and will encourage the formation of wrinkles especially around the eyes and mouth.

5. Limit your alcohol intake to 14 units per week.

6. Get plenty of fresh air and avoid extremes of temperature like going from a very hot central heated house to the elements outside.

7. When choosing make up, go for neutral shades and match foundation with your skin tone. Avoid pearly eye shadows, and opt for cream blushers. Browns and greys are good natural colours that suit most skin types and eye colours.

8. Walk with confidence and remember to always smile and make eye contact.

9. Have a good skin care routine, remember to always remove your makeup with a good cleanser such as ‘Lait Hydra Confort’ from Guinot retailers at £15.50.
