ARSONISTS started a series of blazes on moorland above Bolton which tied up dozens of firefighters for hours.

Now fire chiefs have warned that people starting the blazes, could be putting lives at risk.

Four crews were called to moorland near Belmont, at 7.45pm on Monday and 25 firefighters tackled a blaze which appeared to have been started deliberately.

It came after crews from Bolton were called out to the same area on Easter Sunday and the following afternoon to deal with flames started by a discarded cigarette.

The nature of the land means that crews have to beat out the fire, using paddle-like bats. Approximately 6,000 square metres was affected. The flames can ignite peat below the surface which can then spread across a wide area.
