BUDDING historians at Bolton Parish Church School have re-created historic shields which will be displayed at this year’s midsummer festival.

The festivities will run from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 28, along Churchgate and in the grounds of Bolton Parish Church.

And Year Six pupils at the primary school in Kestor Street have made 12 wooden mediaeval shields which will be on show in the grounds of the church, while a knights in battle scene is enacted. They will also be displayed while other events are being held during the festival.

Elizabeth Tatman, one of the organisers of the event who worked with the youngsters, said: “We spoke about the history of the town and the children were asked to create a design. They then painted them on to the wooden shields.”

She added: “It was nice to be able to incorporate the children so fully in the festival. It also tied in nicely with the work they were doing about the history of the town.”

Headteacher Chris Jones said: “The shields are lovely — the Year Six class is very good at art and it was a nice treat for them after working very hard for their SATs. We will be displaying them in the school after the festival.”

A host of events is being held during the festival. Many are free but some incur a fee.
