Cool Canvas, Westhoughton

HE may be the brother of TV Apprentice star Alex but artist Oliver Wotherspoon is carving out his own niche in life.

The young man always wanted to form his own business and has already made a big impression with his company, Cool Canvas, which produces art for the community.

He formed Cool Canvas after working as a freelance artist and then got regular work with Bolton at Home working in the community.

Mr Wotherspoon, who lives in Westhoughton, said: “Our objectives are to enhance the living environment, reduce vandalism, inspire young people and create a sense of security for older residents which then reaffirms community values for everyone.

“Before setting up on my own I was employed as a community artist under the Government’s Sure Start initiative.

“I ran workshops within primary schools and parent/children centres targeting early years, in areas such as circus skills, wood cut sculptures, murals canvas painting and stage scenery.”

He added: “Different kinds of contracts were coming to me as a freelancer and it was the natural step to set up my own business.

“I don’t want any limits to the size and scope of projects I take on, so I have built up a bank of artists I can call on.”

Since starting Cool Canvas in 2005 he has won regular contracts with Bolton at Home and various schools in the Bolton area.

He specialises in engaging the community in the designs he creates.

Mr Wotherspoon, aged 26, has a studio in the Enterprise Centre on Deane Road.

He said: “It is all about giving the community ownership, using the arts as a vehicle to get out in the community.”

Mr Wotherspoon is expanding and taking on projects across the North-west, all with the aim of contributing to the community.
