CIVIC and political leaders are backing the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal — and are urging the people of Bolton to get behind the cause.

The Bolton News has teamed up with Marie Curie Cancer Care to raise £200,000 in 12 months, which will fund care for more terminally ill people.

The charity provides free nursing, enabling people to spend their final days at home, and wants to double the number of hours of support it can provide by 2013.

The fundraising in Bolton, added to £200,000 NHS Bolton has already committed this year, will give the town a major boost towards making the ambition a reality.

The Mayor of Bolton has spoken on behalf of the appeal. Cllr Norman Critchley said: “I think Marie Curie nurses do an absolutely magnificent job. They are needed. I hope we can raise the funds and that everyone will support the appeal, it will make a difference in Bolton.”

MP David Crausby, who represents Bolton North East, is also backing the fundraising bid. He said: “It’s a fantastic service, the problem is there is never enough nurses. I’m delighted we are putting such efforts in to improve this, the demand is endless.

“It’s a wonderful appeal, The Bolton News support is first class, and Bolton people have always been so generous. I’m sure they will be even more generous when they understand the important contribution the nurses make in our town.”

Cllr John Walsh, the leader of the Conservatives in Bolton, said: “I know the superb work that Marie Curie do to help people quietly behind the scenes. At a time of great difficulty, nurses give comfort and support. Their care makes a difference. ”
