A BOLTON teacher is following in the footsteps of his famous big brother.

As thousands of pupils return to their desks today, Steven Kay is appearing on television to give them some “top answers” on how to get into the school routine.

For Steven is the younger brother of Family Fortunes host and TV presenter Vernon Kay.

The 32-year-old teacher, who works at SS Osmund and Andrew’s Primary School in Breightmet, has been signed up by GMTV to present a series of hints about starting school.

Throughout this week, Steven, who has taught at the Falkirk Drive school for six years, will give advice on everything from what to expect on the first day at a new school to coping with homework and adjusting to a new routine. Filming for Steven’s one minute strands on the breakfast show took place before the school holidays with his pupils getting in on the act — and the first clip was screened yesterday.

Steven is not totally new to broadcasting, having appeared alongside his older brother on All Star Family Fortunes and regularly sets tricky maths questions for listeners to Vernon’s Saturday morning Radio One show.

However Vernon and his wife, fellow television celebrity Tess Daly, couldn’t resist passing on some presenting tips to their relative.

“Vernon and I have always been competitive,” said Steven, “so it’s great to get in front of the camera and give him a good run for him money.”

Steven says he enjoyed presenting but will not be giving up the teaching career he loves — although he is not ruling out the possibility of further television appearances if the opportunity arises.
