JLLOYD Samuel plans to celebrate his recall to the Wanderers side by becoming a “Soca Warrior” for the first time this weekend.

The Whites full-back is in line to represent Trinidad and Tobago in their must-win World Cup qualifier against Honduras after resolving passport problems that had prevented him making his debut earlier.

Samuel was denied a place in for Russell Latapy’s squad for last month’s game against El Salvador by international red tape.

But after regaining his place in Gary Megson’s back four over Wanderers’ last two games, he now plans to make it a perfect week by helping Trinidad take a step closer to next summer’s finals in South Africa.

“Hopefully everything will go right for me now,” Samuel said. “I’ve tried to do this before but wasn’t allowed. FIFA recently changed the rules over international qualification, so it’s something I’m happy to do.

“I have been given the opportunity to play international football and I’m really keen to take it.”

Samuel joins Fulham striker Bobby Zamora as the new caps in San Pedro Sula, where victory for Trinidad allied with another on Wednesday at home to the USA would put them in a promising position in CONCACAF’s final qualifying group.

The Soca Warriors must make up four points on Mexico to make the play-offs, where they would meet the fifth-placed qualifier from South America.

Samuel insists he is in it for the long-haul.

“I’ve been committed for a while and it would have been nice to link up with them much earlier,” he said. “We had to sort out some issues but I want to go for it all the way and I want to be here for a while now.”

After spending the first fortnight of the season on the bench, Samuel recently usurped Paul Robinson at left-back for games against Tranmere and Liverpool.

It was an unfamiliar position for the former Aston Villa man, who figured in every single game for Wanderers last term.

But while Samuel is determined to hold on to the shirt, he insists there is no resentment over the extra threat to his position in the team.

“It’s the manager’s decision if I am out of the side or not — and I have to stick by it,” he said. “He has come back and used me now, so it’s up to me to prove his decision was the right one.

“It’s about keeping us both on our toes. The manager wants two players for every position, and if he can get more he will.

“I hope I can cement my place now. I can only do what I know I am capable of doing.

“You get games and you feel you can get better, so if I have started to the season well, then I know I can get better.”
