A GYM held a birthday party for its oldest member — who still goes every week at the age of 90.

Ann Richardson, of Tempest Street, Deane, is a regular at the Motorcise gym in Victoria Square, Bolton, where she uses 10 different exercise machines to keep herself in shape.

She said: “I started because I used to do a lot of walking up Rivington, but then as you get older it gets harder, so I started going to the gym. I found it fun and it keeps your muscles going. I keep thinking I’ll pack it in, but then you’re sat at home and it’s raining, so I say ‘I think I’ll get on the bus and go to the gym’.”

Mrs Richardson celebrated her 90th birthday with her friends at the gym and many of them brought her flowers, cards and presents — including her 83-year-old sister and fellow gym member Joyce Parker, of Deane Church Lane, Deane.

Mrs Richardson said walking is still the key to keeping fit at her age.

She said: “I don’t do anything special, but I do walking where I can. The doctor said I’ve got a very good bone structure.”

Mrs Richardson has two children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren who all live in Canada.
