TRANSPORT chiefs have welcomed a £2.2 million grant aimed at establishing an Oyster-style travel card across the region.

As reported in The Bolton News yesterday, Greater Manchester is one of nine urban areas in England which will share in £20m of funding, announced by the Department for Transport this week.

Smart tickets use microchip technology to store information on a smartcard, phone or bank card, improving journey times by providing a faster, hassle-free method of purchase.

Cllr Keith Whitmore, chairman of Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA), said: “We are currently in detailed discussions with the Department for Transport with regard to implementing a smart ticketing scheme for Greater Manchester.

“That scheme is in development at the moment and we are working to ensure that we establish the right programme and products, tailored to the needs of passengers.

“Smart ticketing is an important element of Greater Manchester’s public transport future and forms part of a wider, integrated smart ticketing strategy for the city region.”
