THE number of people in Bolton out of work and claiming benefits has fallen for the first time this year.

According to the latest figures, 5.3 per cent. or 8,406, of those available to work in Bolton were unemployed, a slight drop from last month’s figure of 8,473.

The jobless figure has risen steadily throughout the year.

In January, 6,658, or 4.2 per cent, of people were out of work.

Unemployment fell last month in every Greater Manchester borough apart from Salford.

Samantha Barker, of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said: “In the festive season, many companies will be taking on extra staff in certain sectors.

“However, it will be interesting to see if the drop is sustained into 2010.”
