A MOTHER whose son’s grave was wrecked by vandals at the weekend is facing fresh heartbreak.

Sylvia Edge was devastated to find the headstone at her son’s resting place had been smashed into three pieces by vandals.

Now she has suffered more misery — because thieves have stolen one of the sections, which had two photographs of son, Paul, attached to it.

The photographs were the only ones of Paul that the family had left.

Mr Edge died when he hanged himself five years ago, aged 37, and is buried alongside his father Robert. Sister, Felicity Edge, aged 43, of View Street, said: “My mother can’t sleep at night and spends her days crying.

“It is like the people who have done this have taken a piece of her heart away.

“It was bad enough that they smashed the headstone, but to come and steal a piece of it is disgusting. All we want is to get it back, the pictures are the only ones we have.”

Mrs Edge, aged 64, of Langthorne Walk, Deane, visits her son’s grave at Heaton Cemetery every week.

The vandalism was first discovered on Saturday when his widow Donna went to the grave with their daughter, 14-year-old Shanice.

The piece with the photographs was stolen on Sunday.

Mrs Edge said her son committed suicide because he was so upset by the death of his father, and said she could see no reason why anyone would want to target his grave.
