SPRING is here at last and, while the sun has returned, it is not yet bringing us what you would call Mediterranean weather.

But at least the popular Cornerhouse independent cinema on Manchester’s Oxford Road is here to give us a taste of Continental sunshine in the form of the Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival.

Having started on Saturday, March 5, the event brings the best of Spanish-language cinema and art to the city - and there are still 17 days left to enjoy, with up to three films each day.

The cinema’s comfy and intimate three screens offer film fans a wonderful change of scenery to the boring old multiplex.

Among the highlights are tomorrow night’s showing of Amerosa Soledad (Lovely Loneliness) when a young artist is challenged to bounce back after a heartbreaking split from her boyfriend sends her into a spin.

The following day features thriller Daniel and Ana, which tells the story of love, ambition and the horror of a kidnap ordeal.

For the first time at the festival is showcasing an exhibition in the second and third-floor galleries featuring internationally acclaimed artist Carlos Amorales.

The Viva! Spanish and Latin American Film Festival runs at the Cornerhouse, Oxford Road, Manchester, until and including March 27.

Tickets cost £5 for films before 5pm and £7 for after. Concessions are available.
