A FLYTIPPER who illegally dumped household rubbish after he found a Bolton tip was closed was tracked down by personal details discovered in the waste.

Roy Robinson Jr had visited the Raikes Lane tip one Sunday in June last year to dispose of a bag of waste left over from the refurbishment of his parents' home in Affleck Avenue, Radcliffe.

But when he found the tip was closed, Robinson, aged 21, left the bag on land at nearby Raikes Clough, where other items had already been illegally dumped.

Following a tip-off about the flytip, an enforcement officer from Bolton Council's Environment Education and Enforcement unit visited the site, and found information among the waste relating to Robinson's parents' address.

His parents were asked to attend an interview on the matter, but would not say who they had asked to remove the rubbish.

But after a notice was served from the Environment Agency, Robinson's mum Sheila admitted that she had asked him to take the waste to the tip.

Robinson was then called in for an interview, but declined to answer questions on the matter.

Pleading guilty to the matter at Bolton Magistrates Court, Robinson said: "I did it, but it was a mistake and I feel ashamed."

Robinson said that he had only dumped the waste illegally as the tip was closed, and he had seen other rubbish already on the land.

Magistrates fined him £250 and ordered him to pay costs of £320.

Cllr Roger Hayes, Bolton Council's Executive Member for Direct Services, said afterwards: "Flytipping is an unneccessary evil for which there is no excuse. It is unsightly, a health hazard and a blight on our local environment. The council will take whatever action is necessary to ensure that anyone involved in flytipping is brought before the courts."
