I WRITE in response to a couple of letters concerning the use and collection of green recycling containers.

One correspondent complains that by putting old food cans in the green boxes with no lid, it is an attraction for vermin. I presume that both Egerton and Farnworth are served (allegedly) by the same town council. If this is the case then why does my green box, in Farnworth, quite clearly state that no food or pet food cans are to be disposed of in this manner, yet the boxes supplied to Egerton positively encourage such disposal?

Additionally, should food cans be recycled in this way, then what on earth is wrong with washing them prior to their disposal, thereby nullifying this feared vermin attraction?

Another writer complains that sealed bags were not removed with the green box. While I have a degree of empathy with the obvious common sense shown by this person, I would have thought that they would realise that Bolton Council generally do not show, or indeed encourage, the same degree of sense.

This is in no way intended as a slur on the hard working refuse collectors or recycling operatives in this area.

However, my only complaint with the actual recycling service is quite simply that the green boxes are nowhere near big enough for the average "2.4 kids family".

I only have two children and our recycling overflows to the extent that I make at least one trip per month to the local recycling centre, with two large black bins full of plastic, glass and cans (including washed food cans).

Add this to the proposed fortnightly general refuse collection and I'm left wondering what our council tax is used for?
