A PATRIOTIC party at a social club in Horwich promises to mark the day of England's patron saint with a celebration to remember.

The St George's Day bash is being organised in a bid to bring the saint into the spotlight, alongside the Irish patron, St Patrick.

Ken Chaisty, a community volunteer, is helping to organise the event.

He said: "Unfortunately, there seem to be less celebrations for our patron saint these days, but we are going to celebrate in style this year."

Smithills Senior Brass Band has been booked for the event and they will be playing tunes like Land of Hope and Glory to get party-goers in the patriotic mood.

People are being encouraged to dress in red, white and blue, or dress as significant figures from England's history.

The Horwich Carnival Queen will also be attending the party, which will include cabaret entertainment.

There will also be a reading of the famous lines from Shakespeare's play Richard II, which talk of "this sceptred isle, this other Eden".

The party takes place at Horwich RMI Social Club, on Chorley New Road, April 22 - the eve of St George's Day.
