THE future of two major developments is due to be decided on Thursday.

A £30 million proposal for the redevelopment of the Market Hall in Bolton and plans to create an Islamic College in Westhoughton were this afternoon being discussed by Bolton Council's planning committee.

A large turnout is expected at the Town Hall meeting when the council discusses plans to revamp the Victorian Market Hall to turn it into a modern mall and attract major high street names. But stallholders say the development would cut the number of stalls from 70 to 25 and have dismissed the company's offer of relocation for those who cannot be accommodated in the plans.

Meanwhile, trustees at the Institute of Higher Islamic Education want to move their college from Bromley Cross to green belt land at Ormston's Farm, Wingates Lane, Westhoughton.

But the bid to create the college for nearly 200 Muslim students looks set to be turned down after planning officers recommended it for refusal.

More than 1,600 letters of objection have been received by the committee from nearby residents.
