AN EXTREME sports club is seeking new recruits to join in its outdoor adventures.

The Leigh-based Dirt Munchers is a small team of mountain boarders who spend their free time hurtling down mountains at speeds of up to 50 mph on boards on wheels.

The group was formed after nine-year-old Chloe Ball spotted the sport on TV two years ago and woke her 31-year-old dad, Nigel, to tell him about it. They went out, bought some boards and started practising and racing.

Last year, Nigel finished 30th overall in the UK Masters and is looking to do a lot better in the championships this year in his boarder X and freeride disciplines with more practice under his belt.

He formed the club with fellow enthusiast Ray Keeling, an avid boarder-cross, who discovered the sport when he saw someone flying down a hill on a dirt surf board on a camping holiday in Devon.

On a visit to Nigel's Higher Folds home, they discussed the sport and at 36, Ray felt too old to give it a go himself.

But after an hour-and-a-half on a board and after tackling hills, valleys and roads around Rivington and Frodsham with Nigel and Chloe he was hooked.

The Dirt Munchers was formed and they have been joined by Richard Wadsworth, 31, Tim Smallman, 20, and Nigels 10-years-old nephew, Adam.

The club is sponsored by extreme sports stockists, the Hockey Stop in Bradshawgate, Leigh, which has provided the team with new orange tops.

Nigel said: "It's a bit like rugby on wheels. It is not that dangerous if proper precautions are taken."
