A couple of points in response to Chris Davies letter (February 16) which starts by expressing concerns with regard to global warming and the importance of getting more countries to sign up to the Kyoto agreement. He then makes what I consider to be two extraordinary claims regarding the EU constitution.

In the first instance he claims to have sight of an opinion poll which suggests that a majority of Britons will eventually vote to support the EU constitution.

So far, it seems most opinion polls show the "No" vote to be slightly ahead and the best estimate that the pro constitution camp could take from the polls would show the two camps neck and neck. I would be interested to see the opinion poll Mr Davies is referring to.

Mr Davies can only be drawing on supposition when he makes his next point, which is that both sides exaggerate the importance of the new constitution.

I haven't read the constitution in its entirety (life is to short for that) it rambles on for some 511 pages, in contrast to the American constitution with a total of just 20 pages.

However what is clear and unequivocal is article 1 (6) which states: "This constitution shall have primacy over the laws of member states." These are not meaningless words Mr. Davies, and they sound pretty important to me, it means that we shall no longer be a sovereign nation if we are foolish enough to vote "Yes" in the promised referendum.
