RADCLIFFE Borough have made a double defensive signing - including the son of Ipswich Town boss Joe Royle.

Stainton Park boss Kevin Glendon has been keen to boost his squad, which has recently been decimated with suspensions and injuries, and has acted to bring in centre half Darren Royle and left-back Peter Carty.

Royle, aged 30, has played for Rochdale and Oldham and has also represented England Universities.

Glendon said: "Darren is a big, strong centre-back who should give us the height and strength we need at times in this league.

"He'll also be a big threat at set pieces, and signing him at this stage of the season gives both Darren and us a chance to look at each other and see if it suits both parties."

Former Ashton full-back Carty has been signed to fill the problematic left sided role, vacated by the injured Andy Heald.

Glendon said: "He will give us the natural balance we have missed since the injury to Andy Heald.

"He is an experienced and forward-thinking player."

The club have also been boosted with the news that Scott Wilson, Martyn Forrest and Simon Kelly have signed two-year deals to stay with the club.
