FORMER pupils of Bolton's old Blackrod Secondary Modern were seen reliving school day memories on television on Tuesday night.

The school, which today is Rivington and Blackrod High School, was featured on the documentary "At the Chalkface", one of the films which makes up the new BBC 2 series "Nation on Film".

The programme took a look at secondary education from the 1950s onwards. According to the short film, Blackrod Secondary Modern was for children who "failed" the 11plus exam.

Former pupil Ruby Parr, who attended the school told viewers: "What we talked about was meeting Mr Right and having babies. Getting jobs was what we would do while waiting for this to happen."

But she admitted life might have been different had she secured a place at a grammar school.

The documentary also featured rare footage of life at the school, including a sports day and a trip to a factory, which according to Alan Jones, also a former pupil of the school, said was the sort of work he and his class fellows were expected to take.

Both pupils were tracked down following an appeal via the Bolton Evening News for former pupils to come forward.

Nation on Film explores how film both recorded, and contributed to, social change in the 20th century.

Tony Parker, executive producer, said: "The series investigates the role of the camera in shaping our record of the past."
