A BUSINESSMAN was left counting the cost after vandals smashed 17 windows at his fireplace centre.

Mr Simon Fenton, a director of North West Fireplace Centre, Over Hulton, arrived to open up for the day and found someone had used a scaffolding pole from a nearby church and damaged all the windows on the front of his showroom.

"It was obviously well thought out because the centre is on a main road and whoever did this had to go next door to the church where they are having work done, and find the scaffolding pole," said Mr Fenton.

The vandals pushed the pole through the centre of the windows which measured 4.5' x 2.5'. The pole also damaged five fireplace displays in the windows.

Mr Fenton said it would cost about £5,000 to replace the windows.

A spokesman for Bolton Police said: "The incident was reported to us on Tuesday. The matter is being investigated and enquiries are ongoing."
