YOUNG people have transformed a waste ground into a tranquil oasis for hospital patients after they designed a garden.

Up to 17 people from the Prince's Trust took part in the three month project to construct a Chinese themed garden in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The team of youngsters from Bolton took part in a series of fundraising activities and received donations from companies to fund the garden, which is situated between the new coronary care unit and the children's ward.

They worked with ground staff from the hospital, and used a flowing ribbon of slate chippings to simulate a river winding through a landscape.

They used hard landscaping materials and plants to create a calming but low maintenance garden.

And now their hard work has come to fruition after the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Prentice Howarth officially opened the garden on Thursday.

Team member Sammy Pollitt, said: "It's been a great project to take part in and we are all very proud that the garden we have funded, designed and created will provide pleasure for people visiting the hospital."

The team raised £400 pounds by bag packing at Sainsburys and £200 from a tombola held at the hospital.

They also received donations from Travis Perkins and EDM, who supplied landscaping materials, and Arthur Lane Nurseries who supplied potted plants and shrubs.
