SPORTING groups across the borough have been given more time to submit the names of the sporting heroes they want to appear on the borough's tribute to sport.

The council, which is asking teams and organisations to produce a list of the people they believe should appear on the 85ft Spirit of Sport sculpture, has extended the deadline until Friday, March 4.

The trophy-shaped sculpture will feature nearly 1,000 mirrored photo-etchings of people who have made an outstanding contribution to sport in Bolton.

Bolton Evening News readers are nominating sporting greats for the paper's 30-strong "People's Choice" section.

The Spirit of Sport is a public art project which will be erected on the De Havilland Way roundabout, near the Reebok Stadium, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Councillor Barbara Ronson, leader of Bolton Council, said: "This is an opportunity for everyone to have their say in an important and iconic piece of art that will celebrate all forms of sporting activity in the borough."
