RESIDENTS are predicting a serious accident if traffic bosses ignore their pleas to put the brakes on motorists.

Neighbours from the Campbell Community Group in Farnworth say they have been campaigning without success for speed calming measures for the last five years.

They are calling for a series of road humps on Cawdor Street, Campbell Street and Edward Street to stop drivers whizzing past their front doors at speeds of up to 70mph.

Residents fear that children coming out of nearby Doe Hey Park, whose entrance is masked by bushes, are in danger.

They want the speed limit brought down to 20mph as the route is used as a rat-run by drivers.

John Perry, secretary of the Campbell Community Group, said: "We have been constantly asking for calming measures but we've been getting nowhere.

"It is only a matter of time before someone is killed."

Heavy goods vehicles also rumble past residents' houses after taking a wrong turn off Harper Green Road.

Last June, highways bosses said that they had assessed Cawdor Street for traffic calming.

And residents were also assured that funding had been secured for a similar scheme in Campbell Street.

But members of the Campbell Community Group are still waiting for action and say that only certain areas of Farnworth are receiving help to slow motorists down.

This month, Town Hall bosses announced that speed humps and a 20mph speed limit would be imposed in St Germain Street, Sefton Avenue, Harrowby Lane, Mill Street and Duckshaw Lane.

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: "We are aware of the concerns of residents in the area in relation to the speed of traffic and are currently designing a scheme which will hopefully help.

"The measures, if agreed, will be funded from the Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative which is a source of funding specifically targeted at this type of problem.

"We hope to be able to share our proposals with the local community group within the next month or so."
