PROSTITUTION tolerance zones being set up in Liverpool will be monitored by council leaders in Bolton - but there are no plans as yet to follow the city's example.

There have been numerous discussions on setting up an official tolerance zone in Bolton's red light district around Shiffnall Street over the past few years.

Among the supporters of the idea are Labour MP Dr Brian Iddon, who supports regulation of the sex trade, including free heroin for prostitutes who are addicts and legalised brothels.

Merseyside councillors voted in favour of setting up five vice-friendly zones in industrial areas away from homes and night-time businesses.

The sites would have CCTV cameras and premises to be used as health and welfare centres.

Cllr Barbara Ronson, leader of Bolton Council, said officials would be monitoring the Liverpool scheme.

She said: "We are looking at a number of ways of making life safer for prostitutes, while at the same time protecting residents."

Two prostitutes have been murdered in the town centre in recent years.
