A BOLTON primary school has been given top marks by a Government Inspector for fostering excellent racial relations between pupils.

A report published by Ofsted found that the teaching at Clarendon Primary School, helped pupils from a variety of ethnic minorities learn, relax and play safely together.

The Ofsted report singled out the way that staff at the school in Clarendon Street, Great Lever, delivered "very well balanced" religious education for students and found that pupils' achievement was very good.

The school comprises of pupils from many ethnic backgrounds, including Pakistan, India and Somalia.

The report said: "Racial harmony shines out like a beacon so that pupils learn and flourish without fear. It is clear to see that pupils value each other's differences."

Wendy Holland, headteacher at Clarendon Primary School, said: "Racial harmony was just one aspect picked out by the Ofsted Inspector. We have tried to create a relaxed, safe atmosphere for students to learn and we are delighted with the report."
