I AM writing on behalf of Campbell Community Group with reference to the council's latest plans for waste collection.

It is hard to believe that the council firstly emphasises the need to clean up the streets of Bolton. This was fully supported by the Bolton Evening News' "Bin it for Bolton" campaign during March and April last year, and it is felt that all that good work would be undone if this proposal was approved.

The only way the changes would work would be if additional brown and green bins were provided - one for garden waste and one for recyclable waste.

This system would, however, take time to introduce and would have to be gradually incorporated on collection area bases throughout the borough.

A system of this nature has been in operation for years in Walsall (Birmingham); the only difference being is that the council empty the brown and green bins on a fortnightly basis yet still provide a weekly collection service for the household bins.

This would obviously have no cost savings but would encourage people to do their bit for recycling.

It is a pity Bolton didn't follow Walsall Council all those years ago and perhaps now they wouldn't be facing potential fines.
