BOLTON has marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

Civic dignatries gathered at the Town Hall to pay tribute to victims of the Holocaust.

A solitary candle was lit by the Mayor Cllr Prentice Howarth and placed on a table in the Hall of Memory.

It continued to burn throughout the day in the Town Hall before being blown out at midnight.

The flags on the Town Hall were also lowered as a mark of respect

A service will be held on Sunday, starting at 3pm, in the Festiival Hall, which will be attended by the town's leaders.

Children from primary school across Bolton will attend the service and will light candles as a mark of respect.

On January 27, 1945, the largest and most infamous Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was liberated.

Since 2001, that date has now been designated as Holocaust Memorial Day. At the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp - the overriding symbol of the horrors, where up to 1.5 million perished - 29 world leaders paid their respects in a simultaneous ceremony.
