WE would like to add our views to the discussion about a suitable memorial to Fred Dibnah - undoubtedly a Boltonian worthy of remembrance.
Would Fred have approved of a statue - something static? His interest was always in something that worked - or had worked, such as a chimney! At least, something that was, or had been, useful.
Could those with the responsibility of handling the fund look into the possibility of a scholarship for engineering students? There are already charities in Bolton supporting education, and maybe a Fred Dibnah award could be incorporated.
A plaque could be used as a visual reminder. Statues are very quickly taken for granted, and even ignored as things of the past.
Fred was a doer, and this should be recognised; he would have liked to contribute to the success of a fellow enthusiast.
