I AM writing concerning the recent coverage in the press of the plight of working families being only £4 better off than a single mother on benefits.

These stories seem to imply that single mums have a whale of a time, and go along with the ideas of a dependency culture.

But rather than condemn the benefits as too high, surely we should question why employers are not paying a living wage that is in line with the cost of living.

If the government wishes to make an equal society, surely making the impoverished poorer is not the way to do it.
