TENDER romance, an immortal score and enchanted South Sea splendour are set against the dark backdrop of a world at war in Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.

The lush and passionate musical classic is being presented by St Paul's Operatic Society at the Theare Church, Astley Bridge from February 22 to 26 at 7.30pm. The show is packed with comedy but tinged with sadness.

At its heart is the love story of a naive young Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and an older French plantation owner Emile de Becque.

They meet on a US-occupied South Sea island and fall in love despite racial prejudice, a difference in age and the fact that he killed a man. In a sub-plot, a young soldier, Lieutenant Joe Cable, and a beautiful native girl, Liat, also fall in love.

The score is as breathtaking as the tropical setting some Enchanted Evening, Bali Ha'i, There is Nothin Like a Dame, Younger Than Springtime and more.

"We've assembled a telented cast of principals," said Director Paul Cohen," as well as an excellent chorus." The lead roles are being taken by Tim Shorten, Jenni carney, Scott Unsworth and Christine Catherall.

The musical director for the show is Leslie Iddon, and the choreographer is Louise Cohen.

Tickets are £7 (£6.50 concessions) and are available from the ticket secretary on 01204 847866.
