DANCING and an innovative version of a popular TV game show helped Bolton Hindus mark Indian independence.
Young people from the Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple organised an evening of fun at their Adelaide Street building on Saturday to mark the event.
It is 58 years on Wednesday since India gained her independence from the British. To celebrate the occasion girls from the Bolton temple put on a dance in traditional costume to open a night of entertainment, which was attended by nearly 100 people.
To help younger members of the temple understand about the ending of British rule, there were presentations about the British Raj and Mahatma Gandi, who led a peaceful struggle for self rule in India.
One of the highlights of the evening was the temple's own version of TV quiz show, The Weakest Link. The youth group named their version the Weakest Satsangi, or Weakest Devotee, with Harish Ragwani taking on the Anne Robinson role.
A group of young men answered a series of questions about religion, voting each other off for such spurious reasons as not liking each other's hairstyles.
The event was concluded with the singing of the Indian National Anthem.
"It was very successful," said one of the organisers, Eilla Varsani. "We are hoping it will become an annual event."
