DENTISTS are calling for clearer drinks labels to improving the state of children's teeth in Bolton.

The Bolton Dental Association is backing an appeal from the British Dental Health Foundation for drinks manufacturers to list the exact amount of sugar and added sugar in products.

It follows a study carried out in America which shows the average child consumes between 15 and 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day.

British children consume similar levels.

More than half of five-year-olds in the Bolton borough have some sort of tooth decay, with 59 per cent of children having decay.

Bolton Dental Committee spokesman Chris Brooks said: "Labels on products can be very misleading when it comes to sugar in them.

"There are many sports drinks and fruit juices that contain lots of sugar but market themselves as healthy options."
