RESIDENTS look set to win their fight against plans to build a windfarm in their picturesque village.

Hundreds of Edgworth residents have mounted a campaign against an application to build two 95-metre high wind turbines on a hill off Broadhead Road, Edgworth, and dozens of protest meetings have been held.

Now officials at Blackburn with Darwen Council have recommended that councillors turn down the planning application from Edgworth residents Angus and Julia Dootson.

A final decision will be made by councillors on the planning committee on Thursday.

The planning department has received 603 letters objecting to the plans -- and six in favour.

In making their recommendation, planning officials said the wind farm would prove detrimental to the landscape.

Around 200 people are expected to turn up at Blackburn Town Hall to listen to the councillors' discussion which starts at 7.30pm on Thursday.

Edgworth councillor Colin Rigby said: "It has been 12 months since we got involved in this process and we must thank all the people who have worked so hard to fight against this proposal."

Darwen MP Janet Anderson has also been closely involved in the campaign and formally objected to the proposals.

Last night, around 50 people attended the final protest meeting.

They were told by Cllr David Smith, head of the council's planning committee, that councillors voted along with the recommendations "90 per cent of the time."
