A GRANDFATHER used pedal power to help raise cash for a school's CCTV system -- by cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats.

Retired teacher Bill Hurst got on his bike and cycled more than 1,000 miles in the ten-day trip last month in aid of St Brendans Primary School, in Harwood.

Mr Hurst, aged 52, volunteered to embark on the gruelling trek because his daughter, Pamela Smith, works at the school. His two granddaughters are also pupils there.

And he cycled into the Wendover Drive school this week to tell children about his trip during a special assembly.

His efforts raised £350 for the vandal-plagued school -- which needs £6,000 to install the CCTV system.

Anne Thornton, headteacher of St Brendans, said: "Unfortunately, our school has been damaged by vandals for the past few months, with windows being smashed.

"Bill was so kind to volunteer to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats and we are extremely grateful for his efforts.

"He came into school this week and had the children spellbound at an assembly."

Mrs Thornton has appealed to businesses to donate money to help pay for the CCTV system.

Anyone who can help should contact the school on 01204 333133.
