SHOPPERS have been flocking to Bolton's first continental market to sample some of the finest delights Europe has to offer.

Hundreds of visitors left Victoria Square on opening day (Thursday) clutching bags filled with delicacies such as croissants and pastries, hand-made Belgian chocolates, sausages, fried meats and soups.

They also enjoyed handmade goods including Parisian jewellery, Spanish glass and basketware and Italian leatherwear.

Lindsay Bleakley, aged 33, of Higher Darcy Street, Darcy Lever, bought baguettes, pastries and cheeses.

She said: "It's a great way to try different things from other countries."

Damon Hesford, aged 19, of Arnold Street, Halliwell, said: "I bought a baguette, because when I went to Paris, these were all I ate. These stalls make people realise there is a world away from chips and burgers."

Diane Greaves, aged 37, from Radcliffe, and Patricia Greenwood, aged 38, from Bury, had travelled to the market together.

They sampled sausages, and both agreed that they were "gorgeous".

Marjorie Leach, aged 63, of Fairclough Street, Great Lever, said: "I've been tasting jams and they're very good. The goods here are better than the average supermarket, but they are slightly more expensive."

Sue Cankalis, aged 43, of Greenland Road, Farnworth, bought a selection of bread, croissants, Pain Chocolat, fig jam, mustard and olives. She said: "This market is far better than the previous ones held in Bolton."

Malik Drissi, who runs a cheese stall, said: "It is my first time in Bolton, and it is a good town. I hope it will be busy over the weekend."

Organiser Geoff Drinkel, from traders Team Fantastique, said: "It has been fantastic. We have had an overwhelming response and people have said it is the busiest they have ever seen Victoria Square on a Thursday daytime.

"It may be our first time here, but we hope it won't be the last." The market, which has been organised by Bolton Town Centre Company, runs until Sunday.
