A FINAL decision over the future of Horwich's CCTV scheme will be made later this month.
A public meeting on Thursday showed a last-minute surge of support for the town's under-threat, cash-strapped CCTV scheme.
The meeting was called by the town council after most traders in Lee Lane, Winter Hey Lane and Chorley New Road refused to pay £10 a month towards the £16,000-a-year running costs.
Representatives from seven shops and businesses attended the meeting.
Police Inspector Simon Miskell said: "The biggest value of this system is its deterrent.
"Pull the plug and I have concerns about what will happen. I do not want Horwich to become a target for criminals."
Jean Briely, who owns Leach Briely Accountants, in Lee Lane with her husband, Roy, said: "Horwich has boomed over the past few years and people don't realise their businesses are directly benefiting as a result."
John Shacklady, owner of Personal Care Plus, in Lee Lane, said: "There is no doubt about the benefits or value of the scheme. It's just how to pay for it."
A final decision will be made at the next council meeting on Thursday, October 21.
