A BOOK which details the history of the "man and scythe" crest which adorns Bolton's oldest pub will be launched in Bolton today.
The crest is above the door of the Man and Scythe in Churchgate.
Malcolm Howe, author of the 75-page illustrated book entitled "Death, the Grim Reaper - the Pilkington Crest" will be at the pub from noon tomorrow and he will be joined by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Prentice Howarth, who will be presented with a copy of the book.
Tomorrow also marks the anniversary of the execution by beheading of the 7th Earl of Derby on the spot where the pub stands.
In past years, the Man and Scythe has commemorated the execution with a street play.
The event has been cancelled this year out of respect for murdered British hostage Kenneth Bigley and his family.
