THE headmistress of a leading independent school in Liverpool has been appointed to take over at Bolton School Girls' Division.

Gill Richards, headmistress of The Belvedere School, will take over as head of the Girls Division next September, when current headmistress Jane Panton retires.

Mrs Richards, aged 53, who is married with two grown up children, was educated at Loughborough High School for Girls and the universities of Reading and Wales.

She recently gained a Masters degree in Education.

Belvedere School is an independent school for girls, catering for pupils aged between three and 18 years.

It is the first independent school in the UK with an open access entry scheme - which means girls are admitted to the senior school following entrance exams and are helped with the fees on a means tested basis.

Girls' Division headteacher Miss Panton is retiring next summer after 11 years leading Bolton School, the country's largest girls' independent school.

During her headship, 57-year-old Miss Panton has extended the curriculum and increased the total number of A levels which can be studied in the sixth form to 30.
