PUPILS at a Blackrod school are hoping to put big smiles on the faces of underprivileged children this Christmas with their response to a shoe box appeal.
Blackrod Primary School has collected more than 200 shoe boxes containing Christmas gifts for children from Eastern European countries.
Headteacher Ian Dryburgh said: "Some of these children in Eastern European countries have never received a gift, not even for their birthday or for Christmas. As you can imagine our children were moved when they heard that."
The boxes will be taken to Romania, Estonia and Belarus in time for Christmas Day.
The shoe box scheme was started by Rotary Clubs in 1994 and now tens of thousands of boxes are delivered each year to needy youngsters.
Rotarian Wendy Smith, who is on the International Committee of the Rotary Club of Bolton Lever, organised the Blackrod Primary School appeal.
