Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce suggests Gary Speed, currently being touted as a future Wales boss, should take a leaf out of Alan Shearer's book, and retire from international football first!

Allardyce is also set to advise his midfield star to concentrate on his duties with Wanderers first.

"He'd be wise to get himself qualified and get a bit of experience on the coaching front," Allardyce added. "If he has a few options open to him then that's all credit to him.

"But, although he is 35 now, his legs haven't gone, so he should concentrate on playing in the Premiership.

"I was speaking to his old mate Alan Shearer at the weekend, and he said the best thing he did was to retire from international football. It gave him a new lease of life and he felt like a new player.

"Playing for Newcastle and for England became too much for him, but he didn't realise how much until he stopped playing for England. That has prolonged his career in the Premiership.

"It would not be too demanding if he retired from international football to do some coaching but, if he was coaching Wales and still playing, he would be taking on far too much, and I don't know whether I'd give him permission to do that.

"He has a commitment to his country but he also has a commitment to the contract he has with us."
