A LEADING advocate of North-west regional government has called on successful business leaders to stand for election to a future North West Assembly.
Ruth Turner, Director of Vision 21 and a member of the Labour Party's National Executive, made her comments at the North West Business Leadership Forum held at Samlesbury, near Preston. The Government postponed the North-west's referendum on elected Assemblies, but it may be rescheduled for 2005.
Ruth Turner said: "I'm confident the referendum on regional government will go ahead next year, and if we want the assembly to be of the quality that is needed to drive the economy of the North West forward, we need the business leaders of the region to be involved."
